MOUNTAIN SMOKE: Guestbook
Ken Anderson
March 8, 2010
I heard Jimmy Gyles play at the Johnny High Country Music revue on Saturday, March 6, 2019. He was incredible. The rendition of "How Great Thou Art" was way beyond anything I have ever heard. Has it been recorded? I would really like to have a recording of that arrangement.
February 24, 2010
After my recent move I discovered an unopened 33LP of "Lettin it Slip Away". Needless to say, I had to spin it on the old turntable and it brought back a lot of good memories. Late 70's, Whiskey River on Central Expressway in Dallas plus many venues here. I think Hal was at Fidelity Bank. Good to hear you are still going. Gives us all hope. Thanks.

I love the music. Bill Perry is a former PCHS classmate. Arrange the music so Rich gets in a few drum solos now and then.

In the late 70's Billy's brother let me follow you guys around and what a great experience.(Although back then I didn't realize how great you all were.) Went to Winfield, recording studio, etc. I remember a mustard colored VW van(Tom) and that unforgetable voice of Regina 30ish years later. And Jimmy, I had a huge crush on you, even though Mike was my beau. I heard Billy play in Dec. and even though he was ill, he was still fascinating to hear(and just as good as when I watched you in guitar and banjo contest so many years ago). I still have my Bluegrass Jam album and love it. You inspire people even after 30 years.

Guess 1981 or there abouts got forgotten in the history of Smoke. I do remember some pretty good music we recorded and played during this short time. Really sorry that you don't take credit for that too, the Pop Goes the Country taping and the like. Guess there was a lot of baggage with that though, I never hear from Jim either. Tom and Randy, sorry I lost touch with you and Dave, Stan Chase and the rest. Best Regards !

My brother David Coe played fiddle with Smoke when that kid Vince was also with you. I only have an LP of your music, but it's a treasure. "July, You're a Woman" was probably my favorite on that redcord. Glad to find you.

Just a Hey There to Bill Perry. Too many years ago your dad made you practice while the rest of us rode motorcycles. Darn glad your dad made you practice! From early days in Winfield, KS and your performance with Nitty Gritty back in '75? and on through the years your pickin' has brought many an enjoyable time. It's still great to say, I remeber Bill back when we were still young and innocent. Thanks for the Music, Carl BUD Bryant

We heard ya'll for the first time last night at the Blue Door! WOW! What an amazing Group!......What a priviledge it was to hear such a Gifted Fidler. We will be buying some music and following ya'll!....Again I say!......WOW!

I hadn't heard anything about Mountain Smoke in years until a co-worker from OKC (I live in Ft. Worth now) mentioned you. I went to junior high and high school with Vince, and saw you several times during my college years. It's good to know you're still around and going strong. Do you ever get to the DFW area?

My two sisters, Pat and Cathy, and I, all became fans of Jimmy Gyles after enjoying his beautiful music two years ago in Eureka Springs. I have just returned from another trip to the Pine Mountain Jamboree and asked enough questions while there to aid us in finding him. Jimmy, you will be hearing more from the Guin girls.

My husband and I have been fans of Jimmy Gyles for many years--since he was a teenager. We last saw him about five years ago and we were pleased to be able to give him some pictures taken when we were all younger. He is a fabulous musician and a fabulous person. Hopefully, your band will perform in the east Texas area before too long. We would love to see you in live performance.

Aloha Billy,
I knew you years ago when I was married to Tommy Langley. I just heard a voice from the past today via telephone, Big George Yarbrough, that was close with Dale and Tommy. He reminded me of you all coming over to jam at Dale's house and I just looked you up! I am in Honolulu...since 1987 actually. Hope all is well with you! BTW, my son Zach (13) is a musician (classic rock, jazz, pop) and boy is this an expensive habit!
Aloha,

I was trying to find your music on the net or a cd to put on my ipod. I couldn't find at itunes, samgoody, etc. Found your web page, like going back in time. I saw "Mountain Smoke" in Gunnison, or Almont, Co. While on a ski trip to Crested Butte,(in 1977?)
I remember being so impressed with the fiddle and mandolin, that I bought the album, "Lettin it slip away". Still have it today. I would like to buy your double cd. I would hope it would have these selections on it, or a "Lettin it Slip Away".
Thank You

What a blessing to find tis site and to learn you have been able to sustain and maintain your unique style over all these years. Thru a no-longer existant bond with Russ, I was introduced to a very young, and extremely talented group of musicians. I am so happy to learn that you are still making music together. The new photos make me smile, until I look into my own mirror. But when I lister to your music, all the memories come rushing back, I am so excited to hear that you have combined your first 2 albums and a new one. I look forward to getting both of them. I still have my hard copy of the album showing you on the porch. I knkew I should have gotten your autographs then! Will look forward to coming to see you perform. When will you have another reunion show? Do you ever get Russ Christopher to join you?
January 9, 2007
My wife got me a turntable for Christmas, so I broke out this 'ol Lettin' it Slip Away LP that I acquired in '74 in Crested Butte from a friend, Robb Watkins. His current bro' in law was an Okie and former resident of CB- Steve Trippe- and he turned us on to this FINE music. Actually caught your act in a bar out there- sure can't remember the bar name...Is it OK if I burn a copy and send to Steve and Robb? You all sounded great, glad to see you're still kickin, and it brought back a flood of memories that I thought had long vaninshed in the "haze". Cheers, and looks like I'll have to see what you all sound like some 30 odd years later.
